Cleantech Group names Cleantech Center to list of top 10 cluster groups

The Cleantech Group, the investment-oriented research and advisory group on the cleantech industries, has named the Cleantech Center (a NYSERDA-sponsored clean-energy incubator at our supporting member the Tech Garden) as number 6 on its list of top 10 cleantech cluster organizations.

The citation links the Cleantech Center to the Syracuse Center of Excellence in Energy and Environmental Systems as key elements of the Central New York region's knowledge-based economic-development strategy. Congratulations to all involved!

Public Policy Institute report endorses incubators and technology parks

Business incubators and technology parks would play a key role in anchoring regional innovation clusters across New York State, according to a vision laid out in a report published recently by the Public Policy Institute (PPI), the research affiliate of the Business Council of New York State, Inc.

Entitled Transcending the Hamster Cage: Unfettering New York's Static Innovation Economy, the PPI report is available for download here with supporting data here.

The report includes both PPI's own recommendations and a series of personal essays, including a very interesting one signed by Alex Brownstein of Integrated Tissue Dynamics, LLC. Alex is the former manager of the incubator program at the SUNY Albany East Campus, and one of the original incorporators of this association.

RPI will reorient its Incubator Program

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has announced a major reorientation of the RPI Incubator Program, a founding member of this association and often recognized as the first university-affiliated business incubator in the United States.

In several interviews with local press, including one with The Troy Record available here, Rensselaer Chief of Staff and Associate Vice President Laban Coblentz described the institute's plans to focus most intensively on providing assistance to young companies developing energy and environmental technologies.

As part of this shift, RPI will relocate the current tenants of the aging incubator building on Peoples Avenue to other space in and around Troy, including both university-owned and private properties. After the move, some companies will remain in the Incubator Program, and others will be "graduated" if their status permits.

With an emphasis on services rather than a single location, and deeper partnerships with on-campus entities such as the Severino Center for Technological Entrepreneurship and the Office of the Vice Provost for Entrepreneurship, RPI projects that the capacity of the Incubator Program to serve university spin-offs and other startups may rise.

Since its founding in 1980, the RPI Incubator Program has graduated a number of companies that are now prominent in the "Tech Valley" landscape, including Albany Molecular Research Inc. and MapInfo, now the Business Insight division of Pitney Bowes.
